KUCHING: The Social Welfare Department (JKMS) has pledged to continue its support to the underprivileged by establishing various institutions throughout Sarawak.

Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah reiterated JKMS’s commitment to community welfare, extending beyond housing initiatives.

“As a crucial body in the development of social welfare in Sarawak, the JKMS is expected to continue striving to improve the quality of life of the community in Sarawak through various planned initiatives and programmes,” she said in her speech  read out by JKMS director Adana Jed during the JKMS Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration at Imperial Hotel here yesterday (Feb 19).

Fatimah stressed that the CNY celebration aimed to foster camaraderie among residents of JKMS institutions.

“This is to ensure that they can all experience the festivity of the CNY together this year, and strengthen the relationship between the JKMS institutions and institutional visitor boards through activities involving collaboration and positive interaction.

“Most importantly, we want to encourage cooperation among all departmental staff involved in efforts to improve the quality of life and welfare of institutional residents.

“And of course we aim to enhance positive social impact by combining resources and efforts to achieve greater impact on all welfare institution residents,” she said.

Fatimah expressed hope that the CNY celebration would provide a meaningful opportunity for institutional residents to celebrate unity amid an atmosphere of joy and harmony.

As of Feb 14, JKMS houses 255 permanent residents across 11 facilities, namely Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching, Rumah Seri Kenangan Sibu, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Kuching, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Datuk Ajibah Abol Sri Aman, Desa Bina Diri Kuching, Pusat Pemulihan Samarahan, Sekolah Tunas Bakti (Lelaki) Kuching, Sekolah Tunas Bakti (Perempuan) Miri, Taman Seri Puteri Kuching, Asrama Akhlak (Lelaki) Kuching, and Asrama Akhlak (Perempuan) Kuching.
