SARIKEI: The heritage of songket weaving in Kampung Rajang must be conserved, upheld and developed to ensure its enduring legacy.
Datuk Len Talif Salleh stressed the importance of passing down the art and skill of songket weaving to the younger generation for the continuity of this traditional industry.
Highlighting the critical lack of interest among young individuals in this sector, the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment highlighted the need for collaborative efforts from various stakeholders “to prevent this heritage from fading into obscurity.”
Speaking during the Kampung Rajang Songket Weaving Industry programme held at the Kampung Rajang Songket Weaving Centre recently, he expressed concern over the younger generation’s disinterest, often attributed to issues related to pricing and perceived quality of the woven products.
Considering these challenges, he pledged to explore effective strategies that can promote the growth of the industry while enhancing the socioeconomic conditions of local entrepreneurs.
The Kuala Rajang assemblyman intends to discuss potential approaches with the Premier and relevant ministries to sustain the industry.
In a gesture of support, Len Talif also presented a financial allocation of RM20,000 to the Kampung Rajang Songket Weaving Centre.
