Deputy premier coy on next Governor’s appointment

KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian was tight-lipped when asked about the possible appointment of a new Sarawak Governor.

He however revealed that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is currently in the nation’s capital in Kuala Lumpur.

“Next time; next time, I (will) explain (about the appointment), Premier is in Kuala Lumpur, that’s all I know,” he told reporters.

He said this when met after attending the launch of an art showing by the late Chong Liew Syn at the Hoan Gallery at La Promenade Mall on Friday (Jan 19)

Earlier it was reported by a national news portal that veteran politician Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar have tendered his resignation as Dewan Negara president. He was only appointed to the post in June last year.

This, according to The Malaysian Insight is for Wan Junaidi to assume the position as Sarawak Governor, succeeding Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Abdul Taib was appointed as Sarawak Governor since March 2014. He was reappointed for a second four-year term in 2018 and later for a shorter two-year third term in 2022. His current term ends next month.

The Malaysian Insight reported that Wan Junaidi is expected to receive his letter of appointment soon and take the oath of office.

At the time of writing, New Sarawak Tribune is seeking comments from Wan Junaidi.
