PADAWAN: Police have resolved the attempted snatch theft case at Taman Desa Wira, Batu Kawa on Monday (Apr 22) with two suspects now in custody.
Acting Padawan police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong said the public managed to apprehend one of the suspects at the scene around 7.55am while, his accomplice fled the scene.
The detained suspect along with the motorcycle used in the crime, was later handed over to the police.
“At around 5pm on the same day, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) managed to locate and arrest the second suspect along Jalan Airport Lama.
“The suspect, who had a prior record related to drugs, admitted that he was the rider who escaped the crime scene when his friend was being apprehended by the public,” he said.
Both local men, aged 20 and 30, will be remanded to facilitate investigations into the case under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery.
On Monday (Apr 22), the attempted snatch incident went viral on social media via a one-minute dashcam footage depicting the crime unfolding around 7.55am.
In the clip, one of the assailants could be seen grappling with an elderly woman’s handbag by the roadside while, another was on a motorcycle, seemingly ready to make a quick escape.
Two vehicles managed to block the suspects’ motorcycle and prevented their getaway, upon which the public got out of their vehicles to try and apprehend the thieves.
Lim said the victim, who is in her late 50s, only sustained minor cuts and scratches in the incident.
He also extended his gratitude to the community for their swift actions in preventing the crime.
