KUCHING: Sarawak’s newly launched 5G test bed is the right move to develop talent and drive the state to become a frontrunner in digital technology in Malaysia, said Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Dr Zaidi Razak.
He said that the 5G test bed provided a platform for any uses developed by researchers or developers.
“This is a platform to test, evaluate, and further enhance before it is fit for commercialisation when 5G services are ready for the mass market,” he told New Sarawak Tribuneon Saturday.
“We are preparing our talents for future needs, which will be able to configure, maintain, and operate the 5G equipment,” he said.
This included getting the younger generation involved in the IT sector.
Zaidi said that 5G had lower latency, meaning faster real time function for only critical applications such as telesurgery and so on.
“It can handle massive data transfer,” he explained.
On Friday, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg launched the nation’s first 5G test bed at the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) here.
He emphasised that Sarawak, in its aim of becoming a developed state, could not be left behind in technology, which would dominate all economic sectors in the future.
