MIRI: Several development projects are planned for the Niah National Park Caves Complex to capitalise on its new status as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.
Sibuti MP and Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said this recognition places Niah Cave on the world map and is expected to attract global attention.
“Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that these projects include infrastructure improvements and conservation efforts aimed at preserving the natural and historical significance of Niah Cave,”he disclosed.
Lukanisman said this when speaking to the media after the flagging off ceremony for the SEPEDA AMAL 2024 charity event here this morning (July 28).
He also expressed his delight at the announcement of Niah Cave as Sarawak’s second UNESCO World Heritage site, following Mulu National Park.
Efforts to nominate the Niah Cave archaeological complex for UNESCO status began in 2019, with formal submissions made in January 2021.
By January 2023, the nomination documents were sent to the UNESCO Secretariat in Paris, culminating in the recent recognition.
Niah Cave is not only a natural wonder but also a site of significant human artefacts, adding to its historical value.
