KUCHING: Many people especially those residing at low-lying areas have begun to worry about the flooding issue in light of the rainy season. One of those affected areas is Iris Garden Square at Hui Sing Garden whereby residents have been experiencing flash floods in the last couple of days due to the intermittent rains.

A Councillor (Traffic and Project Unit Chairman) of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Simon Lau Kiing Kang, together with a few other MBKS councillors have recently visited the site to get a better picture of the situation. Lau, who i s al so Kuching Hui Sing Garden Community Association Secretary, said that he had liaised with the association to solve a number of issues in the residential area.

He added such effort would continue and that they would work together to solve the flooding problem faced by the residents. Following his recent visit, the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) discovered that f lash f lood happened in Iris Garden Square because of inadequate discharge of rain water.

Lau also revealed that the drains in Sungai Maong could no longer meet the increasingly heavy volume of water. However, he added that the department was in the process of upgrading the drains in Sungai Maong area.

On top of that, MBKS would also be engaging some works to widen some of the small drains and clear clogged drains in the residential area. In the meantime, MBKS would be bidding for federal funding to upgrade all the drains in the hopes of preventing flash floods from happening in the future. It is believed that the situation faced by residents concerned would improve once the upgrading project in Sungai Maong is completed.
