MUKAH: Digital economy will transform Sarawak’s economy in 2030.
Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi said it would contribute 20 per cent or RM56.4bil to Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that year.
“This will simultaneously create 45,000 new high-income job opportunities with 80 per cent of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) adopting digitisation.
“Following that, today’s youth must adapt their careers to the current changes brought about by the digital economy and be exposed to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
“At the same time, parents need to encourage their children to major in science and students need to get rid of the notion that science is difficult.”
He said this at the opening ceremony of the Education and Career Carnival ‘Project of Dreams Realised’ (PRO-DR) organised by the Sarawak Children’s Ideas Economic Fund (TEGAS) here.
Abdul Yakub also explained that the strategic core of state development has gone through three stages.
“In the first stage, Development Politics and the result Sarawak has experienced industrialisation such as in Samajaya Industrial Estate and the Sarawak Renewable Energy Corridor (SCORE).
“The second stage is bridging the socioeconomic gap between urban and rural residents. The proof is that SCORE development has been expanded to cover the Baram area.
“While, for the third level is Digital Economy, the state government wants to see Sarawak’s entrepreneurs engage in global activities on the condition that there is fast internet access in the state.”
He hoped that this programme would benefit the youth and students in line with the state government’s hope to produce more digital workforce in order to drive the government’s agenda to develop Sarawak in 2030 through the digital economy.
