KUCHING: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is offering a 50 percent discount on traffic summonses in the state in connection with the 214th Police Day celebration.
The offer which is for the period from April 5 to 9 is for selected summonses only.
The summonses ineligible for the discount include accident summons for the year 2020 and 2021; ‘No Compound’ (NC) summons for 2018 to 2021; arrest warrant status summons year 2020 and 2021; court hearing status summons; lorry related offence summons; dangerous overtaking summons and queue cutting year 2020 and 2021; summons for using emergency lanes year 2020 and 2021; traffic light offenses summons year 2020 and 2021; overtaking in double line areas year 2020 and 2021; and exhaust modification summons issued starting March 1 this year.
Some members of the public think a 50 percent discount will not only encourage people to ignore traffic rules, but also encourages them to settle their summons only when there is a discount.
Others support the discount as it means they do not have to fork out so much money to pay them.

This 50 percent discount can make people settle their summons faster. It also encourages them to pay earlier before the offer period ends. I don’t think the discount will lead to more people breaking traffic rules.

Of course people will pay their summons when motivated by the discount. But the discount can also make people delay settling their penalties as the police stations will be full of people paying their fines.

People might ignore traffic rules in the future thinking that they would be given discounts, and a 50 percent discount is a lot. Some people may think that they don’t have to comply with traffic rules because after getting summonses they will be given discounts.

As the 50 percent discount is for a limited period, many people will be motivated to settle their fines quickly. But for some people, even with the 50 percent discount, they will still not pay their penalties.
