BETONG: The distribution of 1,044 food baskets from Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat began on Monday (July 12) in the Layar state constituency.

Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu officiated at the symbolic handing over of the food aid at the Layar Service Centre store.

He handed over the food baskets to the respective representatives from the Betong Division Islamic Office, Che Zhong Khor Moral Uplifting Society Betong and St Augustine Church Betong.

Community leaders and the Layar Gerempung Tuai Rumah committee members were also in attendance to represent the recipients listed by the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS).

Earlier, Rentap visited the Betong police headquarters (IPD) for a brief ceremony to hand over the Special Allocation cheques from the Prime Minister.

The recipients were the Betong IPD Police Family Association (Perkep) (RM5,000) and Betong IPD Surau An-Najah committee members (RM5,000).

In his brief speech, Rentap thanked the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for protecting the people of the state, especially in Betong, from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Betong District police chief, DSP Zamry Alli said they would continue to assist the health ministry in dealing with Covid-19 while maintaining order and peace in the community.

Rentap also officiated at the handing over of workbooks contributed by the Layar Education Development Committee for primary and secondary schools in Betong at the Layar Service Centre.

The handover involved four schools, namely, MRSM Betong, SMK St Augustine, SK Abang Abdul Kadir, and SJK (C) Chung Hua Betong.

The workboooks were for Primary 4, Primary 5 and Primary 6 students as well as Form 5 students.

The handing over of these workbooks is being conducted in stages, covering a total of 11 primary schools and five secondary schools around Betong, especially in the Layar constituency.
