KUCHING: The district police headquarters (IPD) is all set to face any possible incidents of flood that may happen from now until the end of the northeast monsoon season.
Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa explained that personnel and assets such as vehicles and boats were on standby and could be mobilised any time for rescue operations and evacuating flood victims.
“The operations room is also ready to operate at any time in the event of a flood in Kuching, and the community can channel any information at 082-244444 or 082-243757 for our men to take immediate action.
“We have also identified areas frequently flooded in previous years and low-lying areas likely to have flash floods or high tide. These areas are always monitored and are under the supervision of police stations in charge.”
The identified areas are Kampung Sungai Batu, Kampung Sungai Lumut, Kampung Buntal, Kampung Sungai Bedaun, Kampung Pasir Pandak, Kampung Bako, Kampung Semarang Batu, Kampung Gita Laut, Kampung Muhibbah, Kampung Pinggang Jaya, Kampung Beradek, Kampung Tiang Api and Kampung Bradek Cina.
He pointed out that in the event of a rescue and flood victim evacuation operation, it must be carried out in accordance with the guidelines set by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee and the National Security Council.
Recently, the police attended a coordination meeting for ‘Ops Banjir’ with the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, People Volunteer’s Corp, district office and other relevant agencies.
Supt Merbin shared that Kuching IPD elements had already been prepared to face any eventuality in the event of a flood under its administration.
The public have been reminded to monitor heavy rain, strong wind and rough sea warnings issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
“In case of a flood, important documents as well as valuables should be kept in an easily accessible place to carry during the transfer if necessary. Always be prepared to move at any time if instructed by authorities.
“Young children need to be supervised so that they won’t play or bathe in flooded areas that could endanger their lives. At the temporary flood evacuation centre, everyone must comply with the new norms and standard operating procedure.”
Supt Merbin added that community leaders and village chiefs must also play the role of middle man to channel immediate information to the police for action to be taken.
