MIRI: About 40 divers joined the “Coral Reefs Cleaning and Monitoring” Programme at Marina Bay Jetty on Monday (August 31).
The programme, which aimed to preserve and conserve Sarawak’s marine life ecosystem, was organised by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) in conjunction with this year’s Malaysia’s National Day.
The opening ceremony was graced by the chief executive officer of SFC, Zolkipli Mohamad Aton.
“The state government, through SFC, is very committed to preserving and conserving marine life for ecosystem equilibrium.
“Coral reefs are important assets to the state as tourist attractions and can boost the socio-economy for local communities,” said Zolkipli during the opening ceremony at Marina Bay Jetty on Monday (August 31).
He added that the programme was also held at the Siwa Reef areas in the state.
“Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park with an area of 186,930 hectares was gazetted in February 2007,” explained Zolkipli.
The 40 participating divers came from various agencies including SFC, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA), Future Ocean Borneo, Miri Divers, Whaleshark Miri, Kenyalang Underwater Services, Dive @ Borneo, the Forest Department and the Department of Fisheries.
