NEW YORK: Serbia’s Novak Djokovic defeated No. 9 Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday, reaching his record 47th Grand Slam semifinals.

This semifinal appearance surpassed Roger Federer’s record for the most by a man.

“I’ve been playing on this court for many years, so many epic matches and I cannot wait for another one in a few days’ time,” said the 36-year-old Serbian who holds a record 23 Grand Slam men’s singles titles.

In the women’s field, American favourite Coco Gauff advanced to the semifinals with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win over Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko.

Gauff, 19, is the first American teenager to reach the US Open semifinals since Serena Williams in 2001.

“It feels great, I’m so happy. Last year I lost in the quarterfinal stage and wanted to do better this year. I have a long way to go but I’m happy and will be ready for the next one,” said Gauff.
