THE implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) Sarawak strives to provide students with a strong foundation in Science and Mathematics, said Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
According to the Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, the usage of DLP Sarawak will enable students to perform well in their secondary and tertiary education where English is the primary language.
“DLP is often misunderstood as mathematics and science being taught in both the Bahasa Melayu (BM) and English.
“However, DLP does not imply this. What it really implies is that math and science are taught exclusively in English, while other subjects like history and geography are taught in BM,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Following this, he said the state is on its third year of running the DLP Sarawak.
“Thus far, we have provided training to all teachers who teach Science and Mathematics from Year 1 to Year 2.
“For 2022, we are collaborating with IPG Batu Lintang and state Education Department to establish a programme aimed at Primary 3 school teachers, which will start on June 14 this year and will involve another 650 teachers,” he said.
In light of this, Sagah added that his Ministry has provided extra materials to assist the DLP Sarawak by developing Teachers Guide Books and Student Activity Books, which have been distributed to all schools.
“Four key strategies are being used to ensure the successful implementation of DLP Sarawak, including providing continuous training to teachers to teach Mathematics and Science in English, providing sufficient resource materials for the teaching and learning of these subjects in English, regular monitoring of DLP Sarawak and undertaking necessary interventions to ensure the program’s success as well as developing a support system for teachers in Sarawak,” he pointed out.
