SIBU: To do their bit to protect the earth, the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will organise a series of activities this year in conjunction with Earth Day 2022, themed ‘Invest in our planet’.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world annually on April 22.

Organising committee chairman Cr Ling Hua Wee said, “Today is the day to take action because we care about our planet, and we are all living on it. Everyone needs a healthy earth to support our livelihood, health and happiness.

“A healthy planet is very important because we live on it. In conjunction with the launching of the ‘love earth’ campaign, I am proud to announce that together with other non-governmental organisations, we have worked out a list of activities to carry on throughout the year,” he said at a press conference at SMC yesterday.

Ling also urged the public to actively participate in the activities with the council throughout the year.

He said the series of activities will kick off with tree planting today at an open space in Lorong Mantis Selatan 1/3. The aim is to plant 100 trees all through the year.

Ling also said that a flea market will be held at the shaded car park at Jalan Sanyan every last Saturday of this month till the end of the year.

Other activities comprise collections of plastic bottles for recycling purpose at Tower two, Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase One from Apr 30 to June 30; as well as Recycling Day “Waste to Wealth”, which includes the recycling of used cooking oil at Ulu Sungai Merah (May 15) and at Kampung Bahagia Jaya (June 19).

Besides that, Ling said that there will be an environmental awareness talk, titled ‘Who caused environmental pollution?’, which will conducted at UTC conference room on May 21 from 2pm to 3.30pm; environmental health campaign on awareness talk on environmental protection and health via Zoom, which is to be proposed in July; and environmental smart partnership award (May to Nov).

He added that an e-waste recycling campaign will be held at a recycle centre at Jalan Mantis every Saturday from this month onwards as well as at town square one, Taman Seduan, Rejang Park and Permai from August to November.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh was also present at the press conference.
