KUCHING: In response to the recent fire in Kampung Bintawa Hilir, which destroyed nine homes today (Jan 5), the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the Kuching Love Book Association (38 Yayasan Amal Cinta) have come forward to assist the victims.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, alongside the association’s representative May Loo Hun Ing, distributed RM13,000 in financial aid to 44 individuals now taking shelter at the Kampung Bintawa Hilir Community Hall.
Detailing the relief efforts, Wee said that each family received RM500. Additionally, various essential items were provided, including 90 cartons of drinking water, 45 cartons of packet drinks, 35 cartons of biscuits, 20 cartons of cup noodles, 70 sets of packed food, and 70 cans of drinks.
He expressed his appreciation for the significant contribution made by 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta, highlighting its role in lessening the burden faced by the fire victims.
After the aid distribution, Wee visited the site of the fire and emphasised the importance of fire safety and prevention. He commended the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for their swift action in controlling the fire, thus preventing further damage.
“I’m grateful to BOMBA for their rapid response, which helped prevent the fire from spreading,” said Wee.
He also advised residents to keep fire extinguishers handy and to educate children on avoiding fire hazards. He stressed the importance of not obstructing fire hydrants, noting that such actions are not only illegal but also severely impede rescue operations.
In a final gesture of support, Wee assured that standing fans would be provided to improve the comfort of those staying in the community hall during this challenging time.
