KUCHING: Investors, especially the young ones, have been urged not to be fooled by investment platforms that promise lucrative returns as it could turn out to be a sham.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that especially in the digital world today, there are investments provided through online of which seems too good to be true.
“Nowadays, on social media, there are a lot of attractive investments which promise up to 20 percent in return. If the return is beyond what you expected, then something is not right.
“Therefore, the public must be aware of this when it comes to dealing matters on social media because there is no physical interaction between the investors and the one offering the investment,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the launching ceremony of Bersama InvestSmart @ Sarawak 2022 organised by Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) at a mall here today.
Abang Johari said it was crucial for the public to either refer to Bank Negara (BN) or SC for guidance before investing to avoid being victims of investment scams.
“When investors lose their money to investment scams, not only it affects them but the whole union of the family will also be affected,” he said.
On another note, he said that Sarawak has advantages from its natural resources and there was a need to sustain these resources.
“That is why the state is going for a hydrogen economy and at the same time we are also exploring the possibilities to produce biofuel through algae.
“We extract the oil from the algae and at the same time we want to store carbon (in the ground).
“This is a new era of technology that we emphasise on and I am sure that we have the opportunity for the people to invest in commodities and receive returns. Because this is not confined to the Malaysian market, but more on export commodities,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Bersama InvestSmart programme is an investor outreach initiative which is held for two days from Sept 17 to 18.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and SC chairman Datuk Seri Awang Adek Hussin.
