KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has urged the public to abide by the movement control order.
In a statement, he expressed his regret that some members of the public were not taking the Covid-19 outbreak seriously, risking their health and that of others in the process.
He said that while the heads of divisions in MBKS were doing their best to serve the people, this should be reciprocated by the public by staying at home.
“It is our duty as a community to work together and cooperate with one another. Do not be selfish and remember that we need to fight this virus together.
“This is a time for everyone to stay at home. This is not a time for holidays or outings and that includes visiting families and friends,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
Wee also advised all to think about the safety of their family and friends as well as those who are close to them.
“Please think about your family before disregarding your own health and safety.
“Everyone should take this very seriously, there is no use in regretting once it has happened as there is no turning back by then,” he said.
Wee added that children and caretakers had the responsibility of advising the elderly at home on proper preventive steps to avoid contracting the virus.
Relating his experience of seeing people dining in at some eateries yesterday, Wee appealed to the police to enforce, compound, and arrest business owners disregarding the government’s directive.
“For those visiting the local coffee shops, please remember that good health is more important than a cup of coffee,” he added.
Yesterday, Wee also took the opportunity to check on eateries and food stalls in MBKS’ jurisdiction in which he distributed notices from MBKS to hawkers and food operators.
In the notice, it stated that all MBKS markets and hawker centres are to remain partially open. Food stalls are allowed to operate but only for takeaways and dine-ins are strictly prohibited.
