KUCHING: Despite having only 19 days of preparation, Sarawak Youth Cup squad coach, Safri Amit, 41, wants his charges to show their prowess when they take on Kedah in a Youth Cup match at the State Stadium in Petra Jaya, here, this afternoon.

“We are going on a mission to collect the full points,” said Safri who is assisted by former Sarawak captain in the 80s, Jamal Wasli.

Safri said he wanted their first match to end on a positive note with nothing less than a draw.

“Our preparation went on smoothly without any problem or injuries,” said the former Sarawak FA player.

According to Safri, they have played four friendly matches where they won twice and lost twice.

The Youth Cup players beat Medical 4-2 and later defeated Abang Johari Cup champions, Lundu 3-1. However, the squad found the Sarawak senior players too tough to crack as they were steamrolled 0-7 followed by another heavy 0-5 loss to Kuching FA.

The Youth Cup squad are led by Abang Haikal, the son of former Sarawak player, Abang Zafari Abang Othman.

Haikal was notable for his exceptional free kicks which often ended up at the back of the net, a resemblance of  what his father did in his playing days.
