KUCHING: Miri mayor Adam Yii welcomes the resumption of several business activities as Sarawak moves into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

However, he cautions that the process must be carried out in a proper manner so as not to jeopardise the many efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has allowed eateries in Miri to conduct dine-ins – with one restriction, from Friday (July 16).

“One of the requirements is that all eatery employees must have gotten at least the first dose of the vaccine.

“Presently, 1,508 workers from 240 eateries in Miri have received at least one dose,” said Yii.

“Any violation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) will result in a RM1,500 fine, with repeated violations resulting in a 14-day closure and subsequent revocation of licence.

“If a new cluster emerges as a result of SOP violation, the eatery must close for 14 days to conduct a thorough cleaning and swab tests for employees. All costs will be borne by the operator.”

Yii said Miri, together with other districts in Sarawak, had done really well in flattening the curve for the past few weeks.

All of this, he stated, was made possible by the movement control order (MCO), which has been in effect since May 28, and the increased vaccination rate, as well as full cooperation from the public.

“We have the situation under control, and I’m hopeful that as more business sectors open up under Phase 2 of the NRP, we will not let our guard down, especially in light of the more contagious variants such as Delta.

“We still have to follow the numerous limitations and controls, as well as continuing to make sacrifices to guarantee that no additional spikes will occur. I’m confident that we can accomplish this together.” He added that for eatery employees yet to be vaccinated, they could contact Juraila at 0197216684 to register for priority immunisation
