KUCHING: All business premises, offices and factories which will not be operating during the Gawai Dayak break have been urged to ensure all their electrical appliances are switched off before everyone heads out.

The call come from Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Datuk Khirudin Drahman to prevent any fire occurrence when employees are away from work during the festive season.

“In case electrical appliances have to remain operating for 24-hours without fail, please make sure that there are responsible officers to monitor them.

“This is to ensure that early actions can be taken so that electrical load would not be the cause of the fire,” he said this during a Fire Safety Campaign yesterday (May 30).

The campaign in conjunction with Gawai Dayak 2022, was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dougals Uggah Embas at the Bomba Sarawak headquarters, here.

On another note, Khirudin disclosed that based on the department’s investigation the majority of fire cases this year had to do with the ‘3L’ syndrome – ‘Lupa, Lalai dan Leka’ or ‘forgetfulness, negligence and carelessness’.

“Aside from that, there are also cases caused by acts of mischief, and the public must be reminded to always be alert and beware regarding the use of electrical goods and kitchen appliances.

“Other than that, not observing good housekeeping steps is also a cause of fire incidents.

“We have noticed that during the festive seasons, the public will carry out house cleaning works and sometimes, they will store boxes or other items in their store room or under the bed

“However, they do not know that by storing boxes or other items in one place, it can be fuel or fire load in the event of a fire,” he warned.
