KUCHING: People have been urged to not let their guard down in light of the ongoing problem of rabies which was first reported in 2017.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Sim Kui Hian said since that year when the first rabies fatalities were recorded in the state, the people had behaved well and heeded advice to vaccinate their dogs.

“Rabies has not changed since 2017 however the behaviour of the people has changed.

“Don’t let your guard down as rabies is still around. Dogs must also be vaccinated every year,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government made the call after officiating at the Kuching Car-Free Morning programme at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) building here, Sunday (May 14).

He urged the people to continue playing their role in curbing the spread of rabies.

“Treatment has not changed. Whether it is scratches or dog bites, the people must go and seek treatment at dog bite clinics,” he added.

He said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will be discussing the issue in an upcoming meeting.

Previously, Dr Sim said the state had recorded 11 rabies cases as of April this year, resulting in eight deaths.

Meanwhile, MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng also cleared the air over misinformation which had circulated on social media regarding the joint anti-rabies operation from May 8 to 12.

Wee said the enforcement team has a standard operating procedure (SOP) to follow when carrying out their duty throughout the operation and never once had forced their way through people’s property.

“Everyday after the operation ended, they (enforcement team) had to submit a report with pictures and others.

“If any of the enforcement team had forced the people to open their gate and shot their pet, report to the police. Go straight to the point,” he said.

He also urged the public to not share incorrect information on social media and called for cooperation from all parties.
