KUCHING: The federal government has been urged to reconsider its decision to cut back on constituency allocations for MPs.
Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng said all government MPs were given the same allocation under the three previous prime ministers.
Previously an additional allocation of RM500,000 was even provided for MPs from East Malaysia, he said.
“Now, under the unity government, 70 per cent of our funding for our constituency has been slashed.
“I hope the government reconsiders reallocating more resources for the people because many people are negatively impacted by such a move,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday (Feb 2).
An MP’s allocation is spent on the betterment of the MPs’ constituencies.
The Star reported that the constituency allocations for government MPs have been slashed by more than 65 per cent this year from RM3.8 million to RM1.3 million.
Under the administration of former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, West Malaysian MPs received RM3.5mil in outright grants and RM300,000 for service centre operations.
East Malaysian MPs also received RM4 million in outright grants and RM300,000 to maintain service centre operations.
