KUCHING: Food sellers at Ramadan bazaars have been advised to keep clean and not use polystyrene containers to encase food as they could contribute to environmental pollution.
This advice was issued by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
He also advised hawkers to ensure that those who prepare food keep it clean to make it safe for consumption.
He also told people to bring their own containers when buying takeaways.
More than 450 packets of “Bubur Lambuk” and 26 aprons were distributed by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg when he officiated at the Satok Ramadan Bazaar, yesterday.
One of the hawkers at the bazaar, Abang Job Abang Masleh, 74, who has been selling “Rojak Buah” for almost 15 years, said he was out to earn some income.
“Usually, my wife and I sell ‘rojak’ at the Sarawak General Hospital car park, but now during this fasting month, we have rented a stall here,” he said.
Abang Job said in the past he usually sold more than 100 packets a day during the fasting month. Whatever happened, all his “rojak” would be sold by day’s end.
They also sell “Nasi Ayam Aladin” and “Nasi Lemak”. This year DBKU has set up Ramadan bazaars at three places – Satok, Semarak and Sukma Ria.
Central Coldstorage Kuching Sdn Bhd and Nestle Maggie are sponsoring the aprons for food handlers and promotion banners.
Also present at yesterday’s opening ceremony was Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
