KUCHING: Sarawak is driving progress in pioneering clean energy, particularly in hydrogen innovation through its electrolyser and membrane technologies collaborations, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
He noted that while the federal initiative through the National Energy Transition Framework (NETR) lays the foundation for energy transition needs, Sarawak’s efforts have driven progress in this field.
He said that Sarawak, blessed with abundant hydro and natural gas resources, has seized this opportunity to emerge as a regional leader by leveraging its unique advantages.
“Sarawak has positioned itself as a trailblazer in the hydrogen economy, as evident in Sarawak Energy Berhad’s launch of Southeast Asia’s first integrated hydrogen production plant and refueling Station.
“This facility, powered by renewable hydropower, not only produces hydrogen through electrolysis but also facilitates hydrogen-powered vehicles.”
He said this in his speech during the closing ceremony of the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference and Exhibition 2024 (APGH 2024) held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here today (June 12).
Fadillah, who is also the Federal Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, added that Sarawak’s proactive approach in exploring hydrogen as a potential export commodity solidifies its prominent position in the regional clean energy landscape.
He said collaborations with international partners in research, technology exchange, market development and subsequently embarking in building large scale production facilities has strengthened Sarawak’s position in this field.
“As Sarawak leads this initiative, I am confident that its success will inspire other states and drive progress nationwide.
“With forward-looking clean energy initiatives, Sarawak exemplifies sustainable development, showcasing the harmony between economic growth and environmental stewardship.”
He also encouraged Sarawak to continue maintaining its pioneering spirit in pushing the boundaries of hydrogen technology and carbon management for a brighter and greener future for a sustainable and resilient planet.
