KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) today announced the appointment of academician and researcher, Prof Datuk Dr Roziah Omar as the new president of Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) effective July 1.
Mara chairman, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said the appointment was based on her expertise, knowledge, experience and achievements as she had held several key positions at both national and international levels.
“I am confident that with her personality, abilities and extensive experience in the field of education, she will perform well and will further improve UniKL’s position in the list of top universities in Asia and the world,” she said in a statement.
Mara is also confident that she would be able to drive UniKL to a higher level of excellence thus ensuring that the vision to become a leading technical entrepreneurship university in the country is achieved, she added.
Roziah who has experience in conducting advocacy research in social development and wellness was also previously the deputy director-general of Higher Education (Private Institutions) at the Ministry of Education
She was also a board member of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (Unisza), Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris Shah (UPSI), Universiti Malaya (UM), Kolej-Poly Tech Mara (KPTM) and several others.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and sociology from University of Malaya in 1980 and pursued further studies in the United States at master’s and doctoral levels.
She was awarded a doctorate by the University of California, Berkeley, USA in 1992. – Bernama
