BINTULU: In response to the rising problem of vandalism targeting utility and telecommunication facilities, Minister for Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom has called on all parties to work together for the wellbeing of both current and future generations.
“This issue extends beyond utility and telecommunications infrastructure; many other public facilities are also affected.”
Dr Rundi stressed the importance of educating the community, particularly children and youth, on the harmful impacts of vandalism.
He noted that early education is essential for building a responsible society that values and cares for public assets.
“Through ongoing awareness campaigns, we can instill a sense of responsibility toward public facilities provided by the government,” he added during the inauguration of the 2024 Vandalism Prevention Campaign Against Utility and Telecommunications Facilities at the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) Auditorium on Tuesday (Oct 29).
As the Kemena assemblyman, Dr Rundi expressed his support for stricter laws related to vandalism, advocating for harsher penalties for offenders.
“Collaboration is key in tackling this issue. While completely eliminating vandalism is challenging, continued awareness efforts are essential.”
Among those present were Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Julaihi Narawi; Bintulu Division Resident Datuk Nyurak Keti, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming and Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee.
