KUCHING: The recent surge in Covid-19 cases does not require drastic measures in Sarawak, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
As the region transitions into a phase of living with Covid-19, he said it becomes everyone’s responsibility to test themselves and seek treatment if thy test positive.
He stressed the importance of practising good hygiene habits, avoiding crowded areas when feeling unwell, and seeking medical check-ups if symptoms arise.
“If you test positive, go to the nearest clinic to get Paxlovid (oral antiviral pill) within the first five days to speed up recovery. Waiting longer reduces its effectiveness.
“This is an individual responsibility. Everyone must play his or her role to prevent spreading the virus,” he told reporters after officiating at the light-switching ceremony for the Gawai Dayak celebration at the Padungan Cat Statue last night (May 29).
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, affirmed that the Sarawak government and health authorities, including the Sarawak Health Department and local hospitals, are closely monitoring the situation.
He said this involves tracking Covid-19 patients, the administration of Paxlovid, and observing ICU bed usage.
Regarding Sarawakians returning from Singapore amid the recent increase in hospitalisations there, he advised them to test themselves and self-quarantine if tested positive.
“If some people don’t test, how can they quarantine themselves? It comes down to individual responsibility.
“Stay alert, not just for yourself but for your family members who might have lower immunity. You don’t want to make them sick because of you,” he added.
