KUCHING: The Election Commission’s (EC) announcement of the 15th General Election (GE15) dates has caused a chaotic situation in Peninsular Malaysia, according to Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“Here in Sarawak, we are very peaceful and blessed because we are independent politically.

“We do not care what everyone else is doing…that is their business.

“Over there, it’s about who wants to get ‘married’ with whom, who doesn’t want to ‘marry’ who and who wants to take whose seats,” the Deputy Premier told the media after turning on the lights installed on the iconic Padungan cat statue for Deepavali, last night.

The programme was attended by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Sri Maha Mariamman temple president Shankar Ram Asnani and wife Karishma Shankar, Sarawak Indian Women Association (SIWA) president Penghulu Lucy Lingam, Hindu Temple Association Kuching president V Sahundararaju and MBKS councillor Kho Teck Wan.

Touching on Deepavali and the spirit of celebrating all festivals of all religions in Sarawak, Dr Sim said the community, big or small, would always come together to celebrate and “it is important because that is how Sarawak progresses.”

He pointed out that such a tradition must be practiced and the public should be reminded that it was their responsibility to make sure the next generation continued to do so.

Meanwhile, Wee said Sarawakians were united in diversity and understood each other better, “which is what makes them unique.”

“So please, if we want to continue this type of harmony, you should know what to do now (in the upcoming general election),” he added.
