KUCHING: If Malaya wants electricity from Sarawak, the former must be prepared to pay an asking price exceeding RM1 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian set the condition, saying the state is already selling electricity to Indonesia.
“Our electricity is already 70 per cent from renewable sources, and potentially by 2030, we will produce 8,000 megawatts of hydropower.
“And there is no question that we are going to sell (electricity) to Singapore. But, whether we are going to sell to West Malaysia or not, it all depends on your money.
“A kWh of electricity for domestic usage in Sarawak is about 25 sen. However, selling to Singapore, the rate exceeds RM1 per kWh. Therefore, if West Malaysia is willing to pay more than RM1, we will sell,” he said.
He was presenting a talk on ‘Advancing Sustainable Healthcare and Housing for Sustainable Future’ at the 2023 World Green and Sustainability Summit themed ‘Building a Better Future Through Green Growth’ at USCI Hotel here yesterday (Sept 4).
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said those in Malaya cannot expect to the the same rate as Sarawakians.
“Otherwise, how (do I) explain to the people? I was voted by the people here (in Sarawak).
“You don’t wish to pay RM1 per kWh of electricity, but want to buy at 25 sen?” he asked.
