KUCHING: Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian has called upon non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to take the lead in organising a multitude of activities aimed at promoting Sarawak.
Recognising the significance of these initiatives, the Sarawak Deputy Premier pointed out that such endeavours would not only foster unity among Sarawak’s diverse ethnic groups but also create awareness about the state among foreigners.
“Sarawak has many NGOs, including associations, societies, local groups and community organisations – all of these are important channels for communication between the government and the people.
“NGOs are extremely important to Sarawak and play an important role in promoting national unity as well as maintaining local harmony.
“We hope that they will continue to stand as staunch defenders of Sarawak and contribute even more to its progress,” he said during the handover of funds to 17 community associations in the Batu Kawa constituency.
Addressing the need for heightened publicity, Dr Sim referred to a recent derogatory remark made by a female lawyer in Peninsular Malaysia, displaying a superficial understanding of Borneo (Sarawak and Sabah).
“As a Malaysian lawyer, she should understand and acknowledge the fact that Sarawak and Sabah are integral partners in the formation of Malaysia. Without their presence, Malaysia as it stands today would not exist.”
Furthermore, he underscored the substantial contributions made by Sarawak to Malaysia, particularly in the field of oil and gas. “The development of Peninsular Malaysia owes much to the contributions of Sarawak and Sabah.”
In light of these factors, Dr Sim called upon all Sarawakians to support the state government in promoting Sarawak to foreign nations, including the citizens of Peninsular Malaysia.
