KUCHING: SK St Andrew, Sungai Apong here has requested for assistance for the construction of a kitchen to cook meals for needy students and a room to teach them survival skills. Many of the students also have no pocket money and do not bring any food for lunch.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kevin Yii who went to the school yesterday morning met with the headmaster and school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to see the progress of the project.

In a press statement, Dr Yii said he had allocated RM53,857 for the construction of the kitchen and some funds for the school’s PTA to carry out its activities including buying items to cook for the needy students.

Most of the students are from low income families and many of them reside in a squatter colony nearby.

The school has 374 students with 25 pre-schoolers.

Yii said in his earlier visit that he has discussed with the school headmaster and PTA ways to help the students to ensure that they obtain quality education at the school.

It was during the discussion that the need for a new kitchen cropped up.

Yii said he was saddened when told that many students would continue studying on an empty stomach as most of them could not even afford to bring food from home, let alone pocket money.

“We want to make sure that every child gets a decent and nutritious meal besides having access to quality education. No child should be left behind,” he said.

The project is expected to be completed by February this year.
