KUCHING: With the current hot and dry weather hitting major cities in Sarawak, this is also the best time for drinks vendors to boost sales, offering all kinds of cold beverages to quench the thirst.

Nur Ira Sarina, 38, from Malihah near here, when met during the last day of the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHe) event at Kuching Waterfront yesterday, said she managed to earn more than RM7,000 during the week-long event.

The mother of two is a full-time drinks vendor, and has been selling various types of beverages for the past three years here.

“During the event, I managed to earn more than RM1,000 per day…and I’m so happy, and thank you to all who had supported the stall,” she said.

She said it was due to the hot weather that prompted many to buy drinks from her stall.

“I also want to thank the Sarawak government and also Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for organising the event and provide us the opportunity to sell here.

“It is indeed a great opportunity for me and other stalls to earn extra income,” she said.

She also hoped the government would organised more cultural and youth events, so that it could open up more business opportunities for the food and drinks stalls.

Nur and her husband do not only operate their business during events, but also sells at two night markets—Uptown at Metrocity and Civic Centre—during the weekends.

“I will go to both places occasionally, and from there I am able to earn about RM500 to RM600 per night,” she said.

She said at the night markets, she would prepare more than 10 types of cold beverages.

“The whole cost of operating a drinks stall sets me back nearly RM1,000, but with the good income from the sales, it is still manageable,” she said.

Yesterday, Nur sold about seven types of drinks during the event, at only RM2 per cup—not just cheap, but delicious—to cool one’s body.
