KUCHING: The city of Kuching South has experienced a significant increase in vehicle thefts and street crimes this year, primarily committed by drug addicts with prior criminal records.
According to the Political Secretary to Premier Kho Teck Wan, break-in cases, on the other hand, have seen a significant decrease of 39 per cent compared to the same period last year.
In response to the rising crime rates, Kho emphasised the importance of collaboration between community leaders, residents, and the police. They play a crucial role as the “eyes and ears” in the fight against all forms of crime, including online scams.
To address these concerns, Kho, who also serves as the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women Chief, organised a dialogue on June 8. The programme brought together various stakeholders, including Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, council staff, and local community leaders, such as Penghulu Giam Ann Gee, Penghulu Alex Pui, Penghulu Tan Heng Kee, and Penghulu Daisy Chan.
Additionally Kho mentioned that MBKS has offered its facilities, including traffic wardens, CCTVs, and meeting rooms, to support police initiatives and expedite investigations.
Moreover, Ahsmon stressed the need for proactive involvement from local authorities and communities to assist the police in curbing street crimes.
He also agreed to send representatives to town hall meetings organised by MBKS in each zone of Kuching.
