KUCHING: Drug related problems are fast becoming a serious issue in Bidayuh villages.

Deputy director of State Security and Enforcement Unit in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Clarence Rorote Sagon said this could only mean members of the community were abusing drugs.

“Arrests made in recent months of Bidayuh youths in several villages are sufficient proof that this social issue is getting from bad to worse,” said Rorote when he officiated at the Biperoh Association Kuching (BAK) annual dinner and presentation of incentives to students at a restaurant here on Saturday.

Rorote called on Bidayuh community leaders to join forces in combating the menace, saying many villages in Bau, Lundu, Padawan and Serian were not spared from the menace.

“Sad to say, Bau recorded the most cases thus far,” he added.

He urged village chiefs and development and security committees (JKKK) to lead the fight to free their villages from the social scourge.

He said more attention must be paid to the youths, especially students, who had a long future before them.

“Parents must make sure their children are not influenced into taking drugs by runners and those out to make big money peddling drugs in the villages,” he added.

Rorote was representing Transportation Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil.

He also urged community leaders, village chiefs and Village Development and Security Committees to work with the related authorities like the Police Anti Narcotics Department by providing information to help combating the drug menace.

On another note, Rorote who is also BAK advisor, urged the association to focus more on education for the Biperoh students by organising motivational talks and workshops.

“Education is the key to success and it has been proven that those with good educational background have greater chances of being successful in life,” he said.

He also announced Dr Jerip’s pledge of RM4,000 for the students’ education incentives and another RM30,000 for the association to hold its activities.

Meanwhile, Biperoh Association Kuching president Mangan Ngandok, in his speech, said work on the association’s centre extension project at Kampung Emperoh Gerung would commence soon following the approval of RM250,000 by Dr Jerip.

Mangan said that when the centre was fully completed, it would be used by the association to hold community activities and be a place to showcase the Biperoh clan’s culture and heritage.
