Drug trafficking suspects on 5-day remand

SARIKEI: A married couple and a civil servant were detained in a raid on a house at Taman Susur Jambu, here at 3pm last Tuesday.

The three suspects, aged between 24 and 35, were arrested after they were suspected of being involved in drug trafficking.

According to Sarikei District Police chief Superintendent Mat Jusoh Mohamad, in a raid at 3pm on Sept 19, police seized plastic straws containing 51.89 grams of crystal lumps which are believed to be ‘syabu’ with an estimated value of RM7,700.

“The drugs are kept in the bedroom of the house. The suspects are being remanded for five days and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.

“The offenders are reliable to a mandatory death sentence upon conviction,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

He added a urine test conducted on the 35-year-old suspect tested positive for drugs.

“Initial investigation revealed that the couple is jobless with a baby. This success is also as a result of good cooperation with the public,” he said.

Mat Jusoh also said that based on the number of arrests made, there is a 40 per cent increase of those tested positive for drugs in Sarikei district this year.

“The statistics include Meradong, Julau and Matu Daro. Those tested positive for drugs are aged between 18 and 40. The increase in the number of arrests also shows that the police are taking more proactive actions to fight the drug menace.

“We will continue to take action on drug addicts and the suppliers. Thus far, the most popular drug is syabu,” he said.
