KUCHING: Sarawak narcotics police have exposed a devious ruse used by drug traffickers to conceal syabu and ketamine drugs worth over RM370,000 inside baby food packaging boxes.

Such tactic was uncovered in an operation where two individuals, a 39-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, were arrested in front of the arrival hall of Kuching International Airport (KIA) around 11.35pm last Saturday (May 20).

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a press conference, said these arrests were the result of a three-month long intelligence gathering operation.

During the arrest, the team seized two types of drugs – 10.3kg of syabu and 2.7g of ketamine, a RM15,000 Perodua Viva and cash amounting to RM1,382.

“The drugs worth RM371,286, were obtained from syndicate members in the peninsula. They (drugs) were concealed inside baby food packaging boxes and later packed inside tissue boxes.

“Once it is done, the packages are then checked in for the flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Kuching,” he said.

Subsequent to the arrests, Mohd Azman added that Selangor narcotics police also launched a parallel operation resulting in the arrest of two men aged 32 and 35, believed connected to the drug trafficking.

The arrests took place at a hotel in Puchong, Selangor around 2am, just hours after the initial arrests in Kuching.

Background checks found all four suspects are unemployed with each having prior records related to drug offences and other crimes.

“They will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, upon conviction.

“The suspects in Kuching who tested positive for drugs, will be remanded until May 28,” he said.
