KUCHING: Sarawak police successfully seized various kinds of drugs worth a total of about RM5.6 million from January to May this year.
State Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief, ACP Jasmirol Jamaluddin said the drugs Ecstasy recorded the highest seizure value at RM2,672,210, followed by Syabu (RM2,236,546.50), Ketamine (RM545,862), Eramin (RM113,120), Marijuana (RM24,105.20) and Nospan (RM1,536).
“Last year, the total value of drugs seized by the state police was RM7,331,694.50 compared to RM7,631,863.36 worth of drugs seized in 2018.
“The number of arrests for drug abuse in the state from January to May this year was 4,009 compared to 8,506 arrests in 2019,” he told the reporters at a press conference during a courtesy visit to Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
Jasmirol said for the period January to May this year, 45 arrests were made for repeat drug offenders under Section 39(C) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, against 56 cases for 2019.
“The repeat offenders are those who have been arrested for a third time – where they will be sentenced to imprisonment not less than five years or a maximum of seven years, and three strokes of the rotan,” he added.
