KUCHING: Two local motorists have been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in a late-night operation dubbed ‘Op Mabuk’ on Wednesday.

Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the operation, conducted by a team of 14 traffic policemen, took place along Jalan Tabuan between 11.30 pm and 4 am.

In the operation, the team detained a man and a woman, both aged 28, as they were suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Both tested positive for alcohol content exceeding the allowable limit, which are 111mg to 140mg per 100ml of blood, as confirmed by an evidential breath analyser.

“They will be investigated under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine up to RM30,000, and a two-year driving license suspension, upon conviction,” he said in a statement.

He added that the team also inspected 83 vehicles and issued 20 summonses against the motorists for various offences.

These included driving without a license, expired licenses, lack of insurance coverage, expired road tax, failure to wear seat belts, non-compliant license plates, modified exhaust systems, missing side mirrors, and failing to display the ‘P’ sticker.

In light of this, Merbin urged the public to never drive while under alcohol influence as it puts not only the driver but also other road users at risk.
