KUCHING: Two athletes from the Special Olympics Kuching Division will compete at the World Special Olympics Berlin 2023 in tenpin bowling on June 16.

The duo are Mohd Zul Adly Majeni and Myron Khoo Hock Ming, who will compete in the event that will see the participation of athletes from 120 countries.

“There are various situations that we would face, therefore, training is very important.

“Even during the fasting month, we continue training three times a week. The feeling of nervousness is there but we will do our best,” said Zul Adly, 27.

He was speaking at a press conference for the Special Olympics Kuching Division at Megalanes Sarawak here on yesterday (April 17).

Special Olympics Kuching Division president Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain said individual with special needs had potential and talent that could be honed.

“Parents need to be more open, to give these children the opportunity to venture into the outside world.

“Many are shy or afraid to take their special children out of their comfort zone.

“We want to encourage the parents and caregivers to give the children the opportunity to explore the skills they have.

“It doesn’t matter if you go into sports such as bowling and swimming, or the field of singing, dancing and so on,” she said.

Meanwhile, Azziszah Jolhi, 55, Zul Adly’s mother said support and encouragement given since childhood were important to a child.

“We give the children the opportunity to get involved in the field they like. At least, they can do what they are interested in.”
