KUCHING: The Department of Environment (DOE) Sarawak and Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) in cooperation with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) are organising an Electrical and Electronic Waste (BEE) collection campaign.
The campaign is organised in conjunction with the state-level celebration of Earth Day 2021. It will be held from 8am to 5pm on Saturday (Apr 17) and Sunday (Apr 18) at the MBKS Community Hall here.
Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the campaign by bringing along their electrical and electronic wastes, where contractors licensed with the DOE will purchase them at a price for the purpose of recovery and recycling.
Among the types of electrical and electronic wastes, known as e-waste, accepted are televisions, mobile phones, projectors, washing machines, computers, cameras, fridges, small household electrical items, among others.
The aim of the campaign is to ensure that used and expired electrical and electronic equipment are collected and segregated to recover beneficial or valuable materials.
Such effort will contribute to sustainable development and environmental progress.
E-waste which is not managed well can cause serious health issues and pollution as they contain several pollutants or heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, and brominated flame retardants.
