MUKAH: Acting Mukah District officer Peleadzman Ahip has stressed the importance of fostering environmental education and awareness from a young age within the community to ensure the sustainability of the environment.
He pointed out the need for collaboration among the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the Environment Department, and the District Education Office.
“There should be concerted efforts, including organising programmes related to environmental sustainability, to instil a culture of caring for the environment,” he stated, discussing the planning for addressing environmental and sustainability issues in Mukah in 2024.
He added that specific attention should be directed towards individuals attending kindergartens, nurseries, pre-schools, and primary schools.
“The culture of environmental care and maintaining cleanliness must be instilled early, discouraging the improper disposal of waste.”
To support these efforts, Peleadzman urged government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to regularly conduct relevant campaigns, such as ‘Sungaiku Bersih’ and ‘Weekend Without Plastic Bags’.
He also stressed the importance of involving elected representatives and the entire Mukah community in collective cleanup programmes, especially focusing on preserving the beach as a crucial asset.
He further revealed that in order to protect the environment in Mukah, more efficient waste management is carried out by the Dalat and Mukah District Council (MDDM).
“In addition, the management of fishing and agricultural waste that can be used as organic fertilizer and the more efficient management of thatch waste by producing biomass energy.
“In addition, there is a master plan planned for friendly pedestrians and bicycle users by providing their own route in the city of Mukah.”
He noted that this is one of the long-term plans for the management of the transport and traffic system in Mukah.
