KUCHING: Hari Raya joy came early for 76-year-old Bedah Seman this year. Her house at Kampung Lidah Tanah, Batu Kitang has been repaired under the Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Programme (PPRMS), just in time for this year’s Hari Raya celebration.
Bedah now no longer has to face a leaking roof whenever it rains. Her old kitchen ceiling, which was destroyed by termites, has also been replaced with a brand new one.
She shared that in the past, whenever it rained, she had to use a bucket to store the rainwater which came from the leaking roof.
“Now, I am very happy because the roof and ceiling have been replaced,” she said.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the repair of Bedah’s house was timely as the Hari Raya celebration was fast approaching.
“A total of RM10,000 was allocated to repair the house through the Batu Kitang Constituency PPRMS fund,” he said after handing over the renovated house to Bedah here today (May 1).
Lo said the repair works were carried out on a ‘gotong-royong’ (communal work) basis by the Kota Padawan Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and the Landeh People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) members.
“I am very pleased with the community leaders in the area; they have good hearts to carry out the renovation of this house.
“For me, it is something valuable and meaningful. It is not easy to ask people to do it for free,” he said.
Lo explained that so far, 84 houses in the Batu Kitang state constituency had been repaired under PPRMS.
Of the total, 20 houses were in Kampung Lidah Tanah.
