KUCHING: The flood problem in Bintulu cannot be solved in a short time frame but instead requires a comprehensive process which starts with thorough study and research, says Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
“In the long term, the maintenance of drains and drainage systems must be done periodically to prevent flash floods,” he said in a Facebook post on Saturday (Jan 8).
He said monsoon drains constructed were observed as able to reduce the possibility of disasters, especially flash floods due to continuous heavy rains.
He emphasised that in addition to cooperation among various government agencies, unity and accord among the people were also important factors in efforts to resolve local issues.
“At the same time, contractor companies tasked to carry out large-scale development need to work closely with the relevant departments of agencies to ensure that the projects do not affect drainage systems, as this could contribute to flood disasters.
“We are all aware that floods are a natural phenomenon, but we are also able to prevent or reduce the effects if early measures are taken such as the appropriate maintenance and modification works,” said Tiong, who is also Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president and Dudong assemblyman.
