KUCHING: During Earth Hour 2024, Kuching experienced a reduction in power consumption by 13.34 megawatts (MW), compared to 8MW in 2023, marking a 66.75 per cent increase in power reduction.
According to Kuching South City Council Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng’s Facebook post last night (Mar 23), the reduction of Kuching’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions increased from 2,400 kilograms (KG) in 2023 to 2,614KG in 2024.
Meanwhile, in other areas, Sibu reduced its consumption by 7.68MW, saving 1,505 kilograms of CO2; Miri reduced by 0.77MW, saving 151 kilograms of CO2; and Bintulu saw a reduction of 11.38MW, saving 2,230 kilograms of CO2.
This collective effort across Sarawak, he said, amounted to a total saving of 33.17MW (6,501 kilograms of CO2) during Earth Hour 2024.
Wee extended his gratitude to Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) CEO Lau Kim Swee, highlighting their role and the technical team’s efforts in monitoring the load during Earth Hour at the SESCO Control Centre.
Additionally, an Earth Hour observation was held at the MBKS Building, featuring an evening of reflection and solidarity at the Council Chamber on the fourth floor.
Participating in the virtual Earth Hour 2024 alongside MBKS were Miri City Council, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (PKS), Sibu Rural District Council (SRCC).
Several companies such as Kingwood Hotel, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Ibraco office, Viva Shopping Mall, Everise Supermarket, Aeon Mall, Farley Shopping Mall, Imperial Hotel, Raia Hotel, Aeroville Mall, and Saradise also observed the Earth Hour 2024.
