KUCHING: Earth Hour — a global movement, which brings millions together across the world to call for greater action on climate change — will be observed here on March 30.
The worldwide movement, held annually to encourage individuals, communities and establishments to turn off essential electronics such as lights and electrical appliances for just an hour, is to commence from 8.30pm.
Several organisations, namely Kuching Beach Cleaners, Sarawak Eco-Warriors, Kamek Kitak Stories, Le Café Rouge, Wildlife Conservation Society, Heart Treasures and The Moff are jointly organising the Earth Hour at Le Café Rouge here.
Earth Hour is not merely the action of turning off our lights for an hour, but one that symbolises a stepping stone to encourage us to think and act in a manner that protect, preserve and appreciate the environment, the organisers said in a joint media statement.
“With the dream of pushing conservation further, several organisations are banding together to invite everybody, of all ages, to learn, engage and experience earth hour together with us,” the media statement added.
“Join us at Le Café Rouge, Kuching for mini exhibitions, fun arts and crafts, fascinating storytelling sessions, educational documentary screenings and finally, entertaining live performances by a selection of local artistes,” the statement added.
The programme is to start at 4pm with arts and crafts and children of all ages are encouraged and welcomed to join.
The proceeding sessions such as storytelling, live performance and many more will continue until 10pm where all members of the public are invited.
The highlight of the event would be the lights out session from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, the statement added.
To top it all off, the organisers said the festivities would be accompanied by live music performances during the lights-out session to keep the Earth Hour spirit rolling.
“Earth Hour is not just about turning off our electricity for an hour but it also helps us to reflect on the harm that humanity has inflicted on the earth and how we can learn and work together to overcome it,” they added.
Sarawak Eco-Warriors vice-president Veni Tan expressed the hope that this event would create more awareness and inspire people to actively play their part in conservation.
“Instead of persuading others to join in, you can inspire participation by showing them your motivation through action because actions will always speak louder than words!” he added.
