MIRI: The Ministry of Human Resources has relaxed the conditions and requirements for enrolment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes.
Effective January next year, it will be easier for students who are interested but do not meet the minimum requirements to study there.
According to Cheong Chee Khing, political secretary to the Minister of Human Resources, potential students will be tested in four vital areas, namely, literacy, numeracy, interest tendency and interview.
“Those who pass the test (UKK or Ujian Kecenderungan Kemahiran) will be offered 18 certificate programmes set by TVET,” he revealed during his visit to the Miri Industrial Training Institute (Miri ILP) here yesterday.
“The new guidelines for the test apply only to “walk-in” candidates,” he added.
Cheong believed the relaxation of the conditions would increase the student intakes in TVET nationwide, especially in Sarawak and Sabah.
“We hope this approach will benefit more people, especially youths who are keen to venture into skills training, and further increase the skills manpower in the country,” he said.
Also present during Cheong’s vist were Senator Alan Ling and four students of SM Pei Min accompanied by their teachers.
