KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) has always been receptive of recommendations from various quarters including proposals on online registration and voting.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Keong said the EC in carrying out voter registration always aimed at producing a credible voter register trusted by all parties.
According to him, the EC is finalising proposals on online voter registration which involves the preparation of new processes and procedures.
Liew also said that to implement the proposal, they need to finalise the system and equipment.
“For the purpose of implementing online voter registration, the EC always strives to ensure that every proposed improvement can be implemented successfully in accordance with the law,” he said.
Liew also noted that the Electoral System and Election Law (ERC) Committee have been set up to review the existing electoral system and laws and, submit proposals to streamline the implementation.
“The main objective of the ERC study is to ensure that elections in this country are credible.
“ERC has been given two years to submit a report containing suggestions on system reform and election law,” he said during a question session at the Dewan Rakyat here today.
Liew added that in implementing its functions based on the Terms of Reference, ERC will also work with various parties, especially the EC.
“Over the next two years, the committee will review and examine improvements to the electoral system and process including the proposed amendments to the electoral law and relevant laws.
“Currently, ERC is conducting research and discussion with local and foreign parties,” he said.
The preliminary framework for proposed system improvement and election law is expected to be completed within one year.
“After two years, a report of the findings and suggestions for improvement will be submitted to the government and the implementation of the proposals will be determined by the government,” he said.
