KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) has set Nov 4 as polling day and Oct 21 as the nomination day for the Jepak state seat by-election in Sarawak.
EC deputy chairman Dr Azmi Sharom said early voting is set for Oct 31.
The by-election follows the death of its incumbent, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, 72, on Sept 15, due to kidney complications.
“Campaigning for the by-election will run for 14 days, from the start of the nomination day until 11.59 pm on Nov 3,” he said after chairing a special meeting on the by-election at Menara SPR in Putrajaya today.
On Sept 19, EC was officially notified by Sarawak State Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar on the vacancy of the state seat.
The state constitution requires a by-election within 60 days from the date a vacant position is confirmed.
The late Talib, a former minister in the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman), served as Jepak assemblyman for six terms since 1996.
In the 12th Sarawak state election in 2021, he won with a significant majority of 4,243 votes, garnering 6,277 votes against his opponents Raba’ah Tudin (PSB), Stevenson Joseph Sumbang (PBK), and independent candidate Tuan Kazan.
