KUCHING: The Sarawak government is incorporating modern agriculture into its macro economic policies in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the agriculture sector is among those contributing to the state’s economy besides the oil and gas (O&G) sector.
“Agriculture is part and parcel of our whole macro economic policies by the Sarawak government.
“We hope it will change the economic spectrum while contributing to sustainability within the realm of SDG,” he said at the Congress on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security (COSAFS) 2024 closing ceremony at Parkcity Everly Hotel in Bintulu, today.
Abang Johari, who is also the Minister of Finance and New Economy, reiterated the state’s commitment towards addressing climate change.
“Talking about climate change, we are now looking into friendly fuel. And Bintulu is set to become a major hydrogen producer by 2028, with support from our partners in Korea and Japan.
“We will produce 240,000 tonnes of hydrogen, the biggest in this region and hydrogen will be the cleanest energy,” he said.
He added that with the state celebrating Sarawak Day on July 22, it will mark the day in its pursuit of downstream gas industry and petrochemical complex developments.
The three-day congress is being organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB), in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Sarawak (M-FICORD) beginning July 10.
The congress provides a crucial platform for various stakeholders, including scientists, academics, industry professionals, policymakers, and the public, to engage in knowledge sharing and critical discussions on sustainable agriculture and food security, of which aligns with Sarawak’s vision of becoming a net food exporter by 2030.
